Learn to Make Your Own Bra!

LEARN TO MAKE YOUR OWN BRA!

This class is for experienced sewers!
We say, “if you can set a sleeve you can sew a bra!”

This class is the beginning of an adventure into the world of bra making. Join Professional Bra Makers, Pat Stephens and Barbara Muran, for this fun-filled, 2.5 day class and learn to make your own bra! We predict you will be so happy with this class that you will be hooked like the rest of us on bra making and have the confidence to make your own wardrobe of bras. And, we predict, you may never venture out to buy bras again!

Students will learn the reasons store bought bras don’t always fit and are uncomfortable for lots of women. Students will also learn the steps needed to make a bra. You will learn about the importance of precision sewing and how slight tweaks to a pattern make all the difference in fitting your bra.

Our goal for this class is to ensure you leave with a pattern that fits your unique shape and the knowledge required to venture into the world of bra making with confidence.

Pat Stephens (BoobieTraps.ca) and Barbara Muran (OfCorset) are graduates

of the famous, Fairy Bra Mother, Beverly Johnson’s professional bra making program and have learned to make and teach her PinUp Girl (PUG) patterns and have made custom bras and swimwear for their own clients.

Josephine’s Dry Goods is delighted to bring these instructors to Portland and is hosting two classes this fall (both classes take place at Clutch Camera Studios, SE Portland):

Class is November 5, 6, and 7, 2019

Tuesday: 1 - 4:30 pm Wednesday/Thursday: 9:30 am - 4:30 pm

Second Class is November 8, 9, and 10, 2019

Friday: 1 - 4:30 pm Saturday/Sunday: 9:30 am - 4:30 pm

Class space is limited so book your spot now!

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • While sewing a bra is not that hard, bra fitting is not easy. So, to ensure you learn the steps and understand bra fit, we use plain white bra kits in class (included with your registration) and we suggest you use a coloured thread (polyester) so you can see where there may be sewing or fitting issues. Your first bra may not be the one you wear, however, usually there is enough time in class to sew a second bra that you can proudly wear.

  • This 2.5-day course runs at CLUTCH CAMERA STUDIOS in SE Portland

  • Day One runs from 1 - 4:30 pm

  • Days 2 and 3 course times are from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.

  • Lunch is NOT provided; please bring your own LUNCH and SNACKS! (PS we are allotting 45 minutes for lunch; Ground Breaker is across the street and delicious but there is not a lot available around Clutch Camera so best to bring something along.)

  • Additional bra making supplies, including beautiful lace, colourful fabrics and findings kits and underwires will be on hand for purchase so you can begin to make those beautiful, colourful bras that are on your wish list. THE MATERIALS INCLUDED WILL CREATE A BASIC SOLID COLOR BRA. BLACK BRA PICTURED CAN BE MADE WITH SKILLS ACQUIRED IN CLASS.

    DETAILED COURSE OUTLINE—
WHAT TO EXPECT ON THIS ADVENTURE:
These time lines should serve as a guide only, everyone sews and learns at a different pace so you won’t be left behind.

Day One (half day) 1 - 4:30 pm.

Pat and Barb provide a short presentation looking at retail bras and why many women just can’t find the right fitting bra and discuss how a bra should fit. We will also review what we will be doing over the next 2.5 days.

Throughout the rest of the afternoon students will be fitted and pattern and underwire sizes determined.

In the fitting session with the instructors, you will try on test bras (made using the pattern for this class) and the instructors will note any changes that need to be made to the pattern for you to get your best fitting bra.

Once you’ve been fitted, you will be given the new PUG Classic 2.0 pattern and will trace your pattern size determined by the instructors in the fitting session. Once your pattern is copied and cut out you will give it to the instructors who will make any paper pattern alterations as a result of your initial fitting and provide you with your customized pattern first thing on Day 2.

While each student gets their individual fitting session, the remainder of the class will set up their machines for sewing and practice stitching 1/4” curved seams WITHOUT USING PINS on bra fabrics we will use in this class: duoplex, powernet, and lace. (Don’t worry, if you really, really want to use pins you can; we just want you to try a few seams without using pins! In fact, we hope you will make an entire bra without using PINS!)

This afternoon you will also have the opportunity to view several sample bras made by the instructors and begin to get a sense of the many ways you can enhance your future bras.

Day 2 Morning: 9:30 - 12

  1. You will receive your bra and findings kits and Pat and Barb will go over what is contained in each kit and how it will be used. You will also receive your customized pattern pieces. Students will then lay out the duoplex and powernet and cut out the bra fabric pieces.

  2. Mark the fabric pieces with notches and we begin to sew the cups together and learn some tricks and tips to help you finish the seams so they lie smoothly.

  3. You’ll prepare the frame and sew the cups into the frame.

  4. Learn to apply the channelling (wire encasement) to the wire line of

the cup and topstitch the channelling.

  5. You will sew the first pass on the bottom band elastic.

Day 2 Afternoon: 12:45 - 4:30

  1. You will sew the first pass on the top band elastic.

  2. You will sew the first pass on the neck line trim

  3. If there is time, you will do the second pass for the elastic on the

bottom band, top band, and neckline and final pass on the channelling.

4. You will assemble the slider and ring to make the straps.

Day 3 Morning: 9:30 - 12
Often on Day 3 students have time to sew a second bra.

  1. You will attach the strap to the strap scoop.

  2. You will learn to apply the hook and eye neatly and securely.

  3. You will attach the bow and other finishing touches.

  4. You will be helped with your final test fitting.

Day 3 Afternoon: 12:45 - 4:30

5. Learn how to use lace and sheer cup lining on a bra. We will teach you how to embellish your bra or make some style changes. We will provide you with online resources and Bra Making groups.

Our Instructors:
Pat Stephens has been making custom bras and swimwear for clients since 2014 and teaching classes since 2017. A sewer for many years, Pat learned to make her own bras in the mid 1990s and upon retirement in 2014, she decided to start a small home business and began this amazing journey. Pat has completed the Professional Bra Making program through Beverly Johnson’s International Bra Makers School in Hamilton, Ontario, and currently has a steady stream of clients looking for custom bras and swimwear and/or taking her bra making classes.

Pat finds that students often get excited after successfully completing their first bra, she laughs and says “they get bra fever and become obsessed with making bras; I’m still obsessed with making them!”

Visit Pat’s website at www.boobietraps.ca to see some of the projects she

has completed.

Barbara Muran made her first corset 20 years ago and quickly found a niche teaching and making custom corsets, and in 2004 established her business, Of Corset. In 2008, Barbara took a bra making class, and like many students her reaction was “Really? That’s it?—no more sliding straps, pinching bands, and in colors/details of my choice!”

Firmly hooked, custom bra making seemed a logical next step for Of Corset. Barbara completed the Professional Bra Making program with Beverly Johnson at her Bra-Makers School International in Hamilton, Ontario.

Of Corset, located in Sacramento, California, provides customers with custom bras and corsets and classes in corset and bra making.

Barb is in process of website development and hopes to share her new website information with students at this session.
